so right before thanksgiving i checked out the movie finding nemo from the library...it was to be adeline's *first* full length cartoon movie. it's not that we've not allowed her to watch movies, she's just never told us 'i want to watch a movie, my wonderful parents, please find one suitable for my young eyes'. so anyway, i pick finding nemo b/c it was the only one left the day before thanksgiving at the library that wasn't vhs or barney or something else i don't like.
the night of thanksgiving, (i believe, or was it the next night?) she gets her chance. she was even asking to watch it! (once, but i went with it). the first scene totally made her sad (you know, the mother 'disappearing'). but she seemed to recover well, maybe b/c they were talking about school.
then nemo is picked up by the diver & the daddy is lost & searching for his fish-son & nemo is so desperately sad in the fish tank...adeline was terrified by this time. we turned it off soon after the sea turtles came on.
she then woke up nearly every night for a few weeks in full sobbing cries, shouting out for her daddy, daddy, daddy (mommy was in there a few times, if i do say so myself). she would say things randomly during the day about 'bad sharks'... but i thought at this point she would have forgotten the trauma & hard life lessons learned through finding nemo.
nope.
wes just changed the screen saver on our computer screen to .... a fish tank. the first thing adeline said to me when she saw the fish tank on the screen, with a stricken & very sad, somber face: "oh no, fish mommy-daddy go away, oh no {crying noise}, oh no, mommy. poor fish."
so i guess that solves a few questions, like whether or not we will ever watch finding nemo again (no), will we ever have a fish tank (no), will i ever spontaneously keep my kids watching a movie they are immediately scared of b/c 'it will get better, i promise!' sadly, promise failure. i'm beginning to think she will never forget the sorrow this caused her. but it's kinda a bit humorous, right? and also, what a memory this girl has!

Oh! poor little thing. What a soft-hearted kiddo you have.
oh, that is a bit humorous! such a big heart that little one has. my mom had to carry me out of the movie theater because i was crying so hard in E.T. when drew barrymore said goodbye at the end. i hope she'll be able to watch it someday... ellen's character is just hysterical.
That is an impressive memory! I tried to show Audrey Shrek, then realized all the jokes she wouldn't get, and it really isn't a toddler show. Even the old-school shows like Sleeping Beauty have scaryness in them! Back to Dora for us.
Finding Nemo was a scary movie for Andrew too. We thought it would be brilliant to have this be his first Movie theatre experience. I felt a little empty after watching it too. Alot of crazy concepts (momma fish dies, "fish"napping,
that crazy light fish chasing scene). So, in my opinion, Adeline is very smart. :) But...you already knew that.
I found myself passing by The Watchmen the other night and had to turn it off because I was feeling about the same as Addy!
