oh, early morning

parents of two kids of the same sex, please gather round in this discussion.

question: do you feel guilty if you buy a new item for one kid & not the other? does it make you cringe if one kid is told by a stranger (or non-stranger) that they are 'sooo pretty' etc & totally ignore the other kid (that applies to parents of more than 1 kid, though, eh?). do you feel the need to make sure kid #2 has as much new clothes & shoes (whether actual or thrifted or other-family hand me down)?

i went through all of addy's real shoes, the ones that we had to spend $55 on b/c adeline had *extra* wide feet & never did a mary jane style shoe fit onto her foot until last year...i went through them to find a pair of hard soled shoes for amelia. i did find a pair that were only 1 size too big (plus they are too wide, amelia doesn't have wide feet) but they were very heavily *used* (adeline is known for falling & tripping on many things. i don't even think you can tell what color the tip of the shoe is compared to the rest. just very scuffed up). we put these shoes on amelia & she seemed very proud & all but my heart was a bit torn for some stupid reason.

so i broke down & found a new pair of boots for amelia (below) & a pair of very cute brown mary jane's with multi-colored buttons on them. but adeline was standing right there as amelia was trying on all these shoes...& i just couldn't resist: i bought them matching boots. & amelia is in love with her new shoes & then totally ignores the old hand me downs of adeline's; it's as if she knows. i feel slightly confident that we made the right decision (argh, $65 later, but i guess compared to the $55 we had to spend on each pair of addy's for 18 months, 3 pair for $65 isn't such a bad gig).

see how cute?! (& not just b/c she plays kitchen with real forks)
*sigh* adeline refuses to have her picture taken recently unless it is a very important moment. so she ran all over the place while i tried to snap a picture of her in the new boots. alas, it was a terrible picture. instead, i'll share the picture of adeline's first true moment of helping me make something (rice krispie treats). she was sooo proud, even after i accidentally burned her hand witht he hot marshmallows. egads.

but adeline wore them nearly all week & used them in the snow, even losing one in a large drift (at school, with the teacher watching. i didn't even notice. the teacher had to yell out to me, "she lost a shoe a few steps ago!" whoops.)

i have tried nearly 6 times to write something else. but i had an unfortunate night of non-sleep, so my brain isn't really functioning. maybe more this week, eh? but i do keep checking my blog to see if our friends, the parsons are headed out the door, with baby bean #2, on the way. we're thinking of you, becky! so many new babies in the past few & upcoming weeks; all is good (as long as these new babies aren't ours! *smile*)

oh yea, last night the first dream i had that woke me up at midnight was about wes & i adopting a child from haiti. hhmm... i had serious conversations last night, as i lay awake for freakin hours, about why my health is so, uh, questionable right now. or else, or else, or else i'd be making my way down to haiti to do *something*. i just feel so useless here & haiti just seems so close. the whole situation has been very heavy on me this week. i think i've cried at least once a day, most days more, when i let my thoughts wander there. it's just such a hard life, sometimes (not mine, but what those survivors are going through & seeing). then i listen to civil-structural engineer wes show me the how & why most of the buildings collapsed. it just seems to easily avoidable.

gah, i just need to stop somehow blaming myself for not being able to do something physically to help the survivors. another ARGH!.
